History & Significance

Released 15 December 1979, the Sand Scorcher paired the durable chassis engineering from Tamiya’s earlier Rough Rider with a Volkswagen Baja Bug body styled after 1970s American desert racers. It is widely regarded as one of the most iconic RC models Tamiya ever produced, cementing the “sand buggy” genre in RC.

Chassis Engineering

The SRB (“Special Racing Buggy”) chassis is almost entirely metal, with an FRP bottom plate; suspension and gearbox components are cast aluminium. Front suspension uses double trailing arms with coil springs; the rear is a swing axle with torsion bars; both ends use oil-filled dampers — Tamiya’s first application of oil damping. Electronics are housed in a water-resistant clear case, allowing water crossings. Powered by a Mabuchi RS-540 motor with a 3.7:1 lowest gear ratio.

Variants & Re-releases

Reissued twice: kit 58452 (24 February 2010) and kit 84164 (18 December 2010), both retaining the original SRB chassis platform.

Restoration Guide

On a genuine 1979 original, common concerns include perished or hardened foam-and-rubber tyres, aging oil-damper seals, and general chassis wear; the electronics’ water-resistant casing can also degrade with age. The 2010 reissues share the same chassis design and are a more readily-supported source of modern-spec replacement parts.
